Why Sequences Get Hard Faster Than You Expect
Watch a short pattern, tap it back, and watch it fall apart sooner than you would guess.
Remembering four things is easy. Remembering four things in order is a different job, and it gets difficult surprisingly quickly.
What just happened
Why it feels like a wall rather than a slope
- Order is extra workHolding items is one demand. Holding the relationships between them is another one on top, and it is the part that fails first.
- You were rehearsingMost people silently repeat the sequence while waiting. That rehearsal is what keeps it alive, and anything that interrupts it costs you the sequence.
- The limit arrives abruptlyPeople are usually near-perfect right up to the point where they are not. Working memory does not degrade gracefully.
Working memory has a small, fairly fixed capacity and a hard edge. That is why the round where you fail usually feels no harder than the round before it, right up until it does.
It is also why interruptions are so expensive in ordinary life. The rehearsal that was holding something together stops, and the thing is simply gone rather than fainter.
A quick note. Getting three or four rounds in is an ordinary result and says nothing about you. This particular version has no norms behind it and is not built to measure anyone.

Science vs hype
What this does not mean
What you may have seen. Sequence games sold as working memory training that will improve your concentration, your studying or your everyday forgetfulness.
What this activity actually involves. A short visual sequence task. This version reports how many rounds you reached and nothing else.
Where the evidence stops. People reliably get better at tasks they practice. Evidence that practicing sequence tasks improves unrelated everyday abilities is much weaker and much disputed. A run here is not a measurement of your working memory, and it is not a screening tool.

Who Can Use This One
- Vision is required and the pattern is shown visually, not played as sound.
- No time limit on your reply. Take as long as you want.
- Keyboard operable, every pad is a real button with a visible focus ring.
- Nothing is recorded. No account, no score stored, nothing sent anywhere.
When Forgetting Starts to Worry You
You just watched your own working memory reach its edge, which most people never observe directly. Everybody has that edge, and where it sits varies enormously between ordinary healthy people.
That is precisely why the question people actually care about, whether their forgetfulness means something, cannot be answered by a browser or by comparing yourself to a friend. It is answered by measuring the right things under controlled conditions and interpreting them against your history.
That conversation is free if that is a question you have been carrying around.
If you would rather read first, our conditions page sets out what neurofeedback is used for and how strong the evidence is for each, and our research page covers what the studies actually found, including the ones that came out negative.
A free conversation with a psychologist. No intake form, no obligation, and we will tell you plainly when the answer is that you do not need us.
These activities are demonstrations of how perception, attention, memory and movement work. They are not tests, screenings or diagnostic tools, and no result here says anything about whether you have a medical or psychological condition. Nothing on this page is medical advice or a substitute for evaluation by a qualified professional. Last reviewed September 2026.
